Root Causes of Back Pain
Injury from sporting activities, motoring accidents, incorrect posture during sleeping, sitting, driving, working activities may cause damage to the spine, resulting in pain.
Simply, the joints within the spine allow for smooth spinal motion when they are properly aligned. If their position is compromised, symptoms occur which manifest as pain. Similarly, pain is often generated when the nerves in the spine are irritated or compressed. Nerve irritation in many instances occurs due to disc damage.
If pain and discomfort are not addressed, in many cases, the body will compensate by altering structural balance. If ignored, this pain and discomfort can result in:
- Increased susceptibility to degeneration and arthritis
- Nerve compression
- Disc damage
- Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
- Altered autonomic nerve response
- Restricted movement of the head and neck
-
Disturbed brain function
A healthy lifestyle, a healthy spine

- Wear moderately low healed shoes
- Keep your feet roughly shoulder width apart

Sitting incorrectly for long periods of time or distance can cause increased stress and strain on our bodies muscles, joints and ligaments and over time may cause pain and discomfort.
Here are some helpful tips to try and incorporate while your driving:
I Don’t have your seat too close to the steering wheel- Check the following to find the best position:
• Your arms should feel relaxed while holding the steering wheel with a slight bend in the elbow.
• Avoid gripping the steering wheel or resting your elbows on the window.
• Additionally your feet should not over reach to operate the pedals.
• Make sure your knees are either hip level with or below
II Have your seat in a slightly reclined position, and use the lumbar (lower back) support
III Make sure you have a headrest, this will ensure limited effects against whiplash injuries, position the headrest so that it is at the same height as the top of
your ears.
IV Always wear your seat belt
